International hackathon on satellite surveillance: DAC leads the DefInSpace 2025 italian stage
Naples is set to host DefInSpace 2025, the international hackathon dedicated to space innovation, scheduled for October 10–11 at Digita, within the San Giovanni Campus of the University of Naples Federico II.
The event, promoted by the French Space Command and organized in Italy by the Campania Aerospace District (DAC), will bring together students, PhD candidates, and young professionals to compete on one of the most ambitious challenges in today’s space economy: real-time video surveillance from low Earth orbit (LEO).
The initiative will take place simultaneously in several countries — France, Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Mexico, Peru, and Singapore — and will culminate with the international final in Paris, where the winning Italian teams will present their projects. The top participants will also be awarded an exclusive visit to the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
DefInSpace aims to foster collaboration and innovation within the space sector, connecting universities, SMEs, large companies, and research centers to develop cutting-edge technological solutions related to security, defense, and Earth observation.
The 40 Italian participants, coming from various academic backgrounds, will be tasked with designing innovative systems for managing satellite video data in real time — optimizing the entire intelligence cycle, from data acquisition and processing to delivery.

“DefInSpace is a unique opportunity to work on real-world challenges, collaborate in international teams, and turn ideas into tangible solutions,” said Luigi Carrino, President of the Campania Aerospace District. “France’s decision to entrust the DAC with organizing the Italian event demonstrates the strong reputation and international recognition our District has earned in recent years.”
The Italian edition of DefInSpace 2025 is supported by prestigious partners including ELT Group, Intesa Sanpaolo, Mare Group, MetaSensing, Telespazio, and the Irpinia Sannio Chamber of Commerce.
In 2023, the Italian teams achieved outstanding results — first place in the technical category and second place in the generalist category — confirming the country’s growing expertise and competitiveness in the aerospace field.
With DefInSpace 2025, Naples and the Campania region reaffirm their strategic role within Europe’s aerospace ecosystem, positioning themselves as a hub of innovation, training, and international collaboration.
